Quadruple Birthday Celebrations

Kale flower fresh from Flemington Market

Finally, we got to the June combined bday celebrations \^o^/
We did it with an easy casual lunch with just families over at my aunt's place.
So, without further ado, let the food do the talking ^_^

Pear, Walnut, Fennel & Rocket Salad

It's missing some shaved parmesan :( My aunt said she still got a chunk in her fridge so I didn't get any. And of course, when I go to shave it, the cheese has past it's prime and I cannot shave it T___T
All I get was a dusting of parmesan !!
The salad is super easy to assemble, slice the fennel thinly, slice some pears, toss together with the rocket and sprinkle with walnut & shaved parmesan.
I just made a simple balsamic vinegar & olive oil vinaigrette and a little sprinkle of sea salt.

Wagyu studded with rosemary ; Prep for the pork salad

We got a chunk of wagyu from Glenmore Meat's warehouse in Ultimo, I can't remember which part of the cow the meat is from, but it's not from the rump or sirloin. It was a bit of a lucky dip since we don't really know if it will tough or soft :P We figured, since it's wagyu, even the cut that is usually tough can't be that tough !

Grilled Wagyu Minute Steaks

Tadahhh !!! Thankfully the beef was tender and juicy *phew*
Served with some kind of dressing my aunt got off Jamie Oliver's recipe. I think it was some mint, chilli and oil. I didn't quite like the dressing because all I taste is oil, I'm happy with just some hot mustard on the side to go with it really :D

Creamy Mash Potato

A big pot of creamy mash potato to go with the steaks.

Summer Pork Salad

Yes...my aunt insisted on making this summer salad in the middle of winter -___-;
There is a good reason it's for summer because of course we couldn't get our hands on fresh mangoes !!
So we had to use canned mangoes instead, luckily we can find some fresh pineapple and strawberries.
The pork tenderloin was grilled then sliced, tossed together with mangoes, strawberries, pineapples, spanish onion & mint. The dressing was lemon vinaigrette.

Lamb & Vegs BBQ-ing

Let's move out to the backyard where some tender lamb backstraps are happily grilling alongside with some sweet potatoes and eggplants.

Crusted lamb with pistounade provencale

We had a team building activity at work with Cheeky Food Group a few months back where we were given some recipes and off we go pretending to be chefs !
This lamb recipe was one of the dish that my team made and it converts even a non-lamb eater like me.
I think because the cut used was the backstrap, it was very lean and hence no "lamby" flavour, if you get what I mean ?
It was a hit on the table, everyone loved the pistounade provencale that goes with the lamb.
Scroll right down for the recipe if you want to try it out at home :)

Birthday Cakes

It's time to blow the candles and tuck into the cakes :) As mentioned in the last post, I got these cakes from Guylian Chocolate Cafe.

100% Pure Pleasure
Belgian chocolate mousse with almond pannacotta and Guylian shiny icing

I think this one doesn't need more introduction, it has been on their cake list since they first open here in Sydney and it remains even after they revamp their cake collection.
Rich chocolate mousse with a creamy pannacotta centre, delicious !!

Golden Treasure
Saffron honey mousse and ginseng bavarois with layers of crispy hazelnut crepe and olive oil sponge.

With the odd combinations of flavours (ginseng !?!) it is surprisingly tasted very goood !
There is a slight taste of the ginseng and it's bitterness, I like it :)

"G" Forest
Layers of rich Guylian baked chocolate cake with dark cherries and gel, creme patissiere and chocolate shavings.

This is not too bad actually, the cake is moist and drenched with Kirsch.

Caramelt
Toffee caramelized hazelnut mousse with caramel ganache and chocolate cocoa sponge coating

Another one that everyone liked, can't really go wrong with a combination of caramel and  chocolate :)

Crusted Lamb with Pistounade Provencale
(Recipe by Cheeky Food Group)

1kg Lamb Backstrap

Crust Mix :
3 tsp black peppercorns
3 tsp cumin seed, roasted and ground
Sea salt

Pistounade Provencale Mixture:
160g anchovy pitted olives, roughly chopped
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
1 cup basil, roughly chopped
2 tbsp pine nuts, roasted
Cayenne pepper
1/4 cup Extra virgin olive oil

Method :

  1. Dry roast cumin seed and peppercorns in saute pan till fragrant.
  2. Crush the roasted spices in a mortar until coarsely ground. Pour spice mixture evenly onto a tray, adding some sea salt.
  3. Place the lamb on the tray and press the spices onto the meat so it sticks and forms a crust. Let it rest in the fridge, covered for about 1 hour.
  4. In a food processor, blend the olives, pine nuts, garlic, basil and oil until they are almost like a puree. Season with cayenne pepper and extra black pepper, place in the fridge until required.
  5. Bring the marinated lamb to room temperature before cooking it.
  6. Cook the lamb on a bbq or hot pan for about 5 minutes, the lamb should be medium rare (we kinda over cooked it this time round :P). Of course cooking time will vary depending on the size of the meat itself.
  7. Let it rest for 5 - 10minutes and cover lightly with fill before slicing them.
  8. Serve with some grilled vegetables and top generously with the pistounade provencale.

The Winery by Gazebo, Surry Hills - Another Birthday Lunch

The 3rd lunch in a row for my birthday this year ! Another year older and looks like another dress size up for me >__<
So I picked The Winery by Gazebo in Surry Hills, since it looked real pretty from the inside :)

A bunch of Tiger Lilies from my friends ; Plastic rose in an empty wine bottle

The inside of The Winery is as amazing as it looked from the outside, love the chairs and the decors.
Too bad they use plastic flowers everywhere though, it's a tad tacky hehehee...
Upstairs lounge is much more cosy and is probably perfect for a lazy weekend catch-up with friends.
According to my friends who have been here at night time, it's much better during day time as it gets crowded and very noisy at night.

Funky chairs ; Birds upside down on the ceiling ; View of the kitchen ; The Garden Room

Jug of Rose Sangria ; Menu

Ordered a jug of rose sangria for the table, of course I didn't had any of it :P
But it does look yummy and refreshing with the strawberries and lemons in it....

Veal & Chorizo Sausage Roll with a Chunky Pear Tomato Jam

We ordered an entree to share as we know the main would be quite a generous portion.
There are 4 thick slices of sausage rolls on the board and served with the sweet chunky pear tomato jam.
The veal & chorizo filling is very moist and tasty with flaky buttery pastry.
A fancy twist on a good old sausage roll !

Barramundi fillets fried in a light beer batter, mushy peas, fries & tartare

I spotted these empty wire mesh basket on the kitchen counter and I know I must order this ! Simply for the novelty value, I'm such a sucker for things like that :P
And as I expected, it tasted just like any other fish & chips dish. The chips were quite soggy and the bottle of vinegar is, I think, is diluted. Because no matter how much I sprinkle the chips with it, I still can't taste the vinegar.  So I just resort to dipping it with the tartare sauce. The fish itself was a tad dry as well.

I didn't get to taste the other dishes, so I'll just post some pictures of them :)

Angel hair pasta with Alaskan crab, bisque, snowpeas, tomato & crispy shallots

This pasta dish apparently is one of the best dishes here at The Winery, there are big chunks of Alaskan crab meat pieces and it does looked rich.

'Steak Frites' Grilled sirloin, café de Paris & fries of course

Caramelized pumpkin & chestnut cannelloni, sauteed silverbeet & burnt butter

Grilled chicken & salt roasted romas salad, soft herb dressing, kipfler crisps

Mussels tossed in a white wine sauce, forest mushrooms & spec

Then it's time for some desserts time !

Affogato with Frangelico

Pouring in the whole glass of Frangelico in one go !!

Our style 'Banoffie pie' Banana, caramel mousse & shaved chocolate

Okay....this is definitely not the Banoffie Pie that I'm expecting it to be, I supposed that's why it's named "our style banoffie pie".
To put it in one line, it's a banoffie "pie" in a glass (like trifle) minus the pie crust.
It's like eating a glass of caramel mousse.

Granny Smith crumble in a walnut pastry cup, vanilla bean ice cream

This is very good ! The pastry cup is crispy and the tartness of the apple cuts back the sweetness of the crème anglaise and ice cream.

Upside down pineapple tart, balsamic caramel & a scoop of coconut ice cream

The pastry was nicely caramelized and crisp, however the pineapple is caramelized way to far it is bitter. I ended up moving the pineapple aside and just polished off the pastry and ice cream.

Overall, there are some hits and some misses with the food here, but the dining companions and atmosphere of the restaurant made up for it.

Thank you guys for the lovely lunch, pretty flowers and the Accoutrement voucher \^o^/

Garden Brasserie, Neutral Bay (2nd Visit) For Birthday Lunch

I'm back at Garden Brasserie in Neutral Bay sooner than I thought I would :)
I picked this place for birthday lunch with family and friends on a sunny Saturday.

Some of the dishes we ordered are the same as what I've reviewed on my first visit here, so I shall skip the familiars and just post the new ones.

Refreshing Lemon & Lime Bitters on a warm winter day.

Complimentary Sourdough and Soy & Linseed Breads w/ Honey Dijon Mustard Vinaigrette

The vinaigrette is sweet with strong aroma of olive oil, it's nice to have something different to dip our bread in.
I'm not sure if the bread were baked in house but they are definitely fresh :)

We ordered a few of the Something to Share platters to start us with while we wait for the others to arrive.
Please excuse the shadowy photos, the sun was shining so bright behind the object @___@

Vegetable Board

The vegetable board that I didn't get to try on my first visit !!
The marinated char grilled vegetables (zucchini, asparagus, capsicum, eggplant) are really good. The baked ricotta is very creamy but light. The toasted bread is super crispy too.
I'm glad I ordered this again this time :)

Charcuterie Board

I didn't get to try this as I'm not a big fan of cold cut meats :) But the others said it was good. What we have here on this board is some prosciutto, sopressa, air dried wagyu, olives, horseradish & grissini .
On hindsight, I should have tried that air dried wagyu , it looked interesting...all black like that...hmmm....

Seafood Board

If you want to have just one of the shared board, this is the one to order.
Everything on this board dissapear in a flash ! The rock oysters is very fresh with shallots and Jerez vinegar, even my aunty who is quite fussy with her oysters dressings is raving about it.
The Hiramasa kingfish carpaccio is served on a bed of shaved fennel, radish, coriander and apple citrus vinaigrette. I love this one very much :D
The chili salt calamari is still as amazing as it was the first time round and the sugar cured ocean trout was delicious as well.
The ocean trout does not have the fishy oily smell like you'd sometimes get in smoked salmon, this one has clean taste.

The amazing Hiramasa Kingfish Carpaccio

And now, onto the mains :

Crumbed King George Whiting Fillets with Tartare Sauce & Polenta Chips

Roast Berskhire Pork Cutlet w/ Pomme Puree & Apples with Calvados

This is the dish for lovers of pork belly. As you can see, almost half of it is fat LOL
It was too rich for me so I cut off the fatty layer and passed it on to my cousin :P
Had a taste of it first of course, the fatty layer is creamy and the skin is very very crispy *crunch*crunch*.
The leaner part of the pork in juicy and full of flavours, not to mention the very creamy pomme puree and the tartness of the apple and the sweetness of the Calvados.

Nothing beats the surprise Dark Chocolate Tart to end the lovely lunch !! My auntie has thankfully picked the right dessert by random LOL

My nephew who loves blowing off birthday candles ...any candles will do actually, even tealights at times.

Another satisfying meal at Garden Brasserie \^o^/
Hope this place keeps up with their yummy foods and friendly service as it truly is a place worth returning to again and again, for lunch or dinner.

Brasserie Bread, Banksmeadow

Brasserie Bread is only about 5 minutes drive from the office.
We have been coming to this cafe / bakery / patisserie frequently for lunch and almost every day to get a cup of Allpress Coffee to go.
So, instead of going to lunch for colleagues' birthdays like the usual, one of us suggested why not do a brunch instead ?
Later on my suspicion was confirmed, he who suggested it has craving for their Sourdough Pancakes LOL

As Brasserie Bread do not take bookings, we were lucky to get a table for 11 of us when we got there around mid morning !

Sourdough Pancakes w/ Stewed Berries & Honeycomb Cream

The pancakes are rich in flavour but still light and fluffy in texture, and I love the honeycomb cream...mmmmm.

Sourdough Pancakes w/ Banana & Maple Syrup

And seems like there is a sprinkle of coconut shavings too. The banana is incorporated into the pancake instead of placed on top like you'd find normally in cafes.

The following two are already made up for a quick grab & go for those who are short for time :)

Ham & Cheese Croissant

Brasserie Bread Chicken Club Sandwich

These ones are made fresh to order in the cafe, of course you still can have them for take away :D

Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Avocado, Bacon, Crispy Bacon on Wholemeal Toast w/  A Poached Egg

Florentine Panini

My favourite item here !! Didn't get it this time round since I'm having a big dinner later that night :P
Fried egg, bacon, spinach and hollandaise sauce on freshly baked panini - oh so delicous !!

We have proposed to our group manager that we should move our monthly team meeting to Brasserie Bread since they have food and free Wi-Fi connection LOL
He nodded and smile - who knows what that means ? Yay or Nay ? Hmmm....

Then later on in the afternoon, a birthday cake at the office \^o^/ Thanks guysss !!!!
The cake is from nearby Croquembouche Patisserie in Banksmeadow.

Red Berries - Reduction of berries with spices and vanilla beans with mascarpone cream
