Capital Grill, Circular Quay

One of the 4 Artworks by Tilo Kaiser

Another deal that I stumbled upon while browsing Eatability :) From now till the 1st November, Capital Grill is offering a special Taste of Sydney 5 Course Degustation menu. It is hard to pass when it is only $59 for a 5 course meal don't you think ?
I have been hearing / reading mixed reviews about Capital Grill, so I told my friends to not crucify me if the meals turns out to be unsatisfactory.
Thankfully, the negative reviews I've heard / read turned out to be unfounded !! *safe*

Wine Menu ; Cutleries (cute oyster fork)

When I rang to make a booking for the 6 of us, I've already mentioned that we will be having the degustation menu.
So once we were seated, we were only given the wine & bar menu to peruse.
As soon as everyone has arrived, the waiter asked whether they can start bringing out the foods now.
Yes please ^_^

Warm Sourdough & Salted Butter

The sourdough was served warm and it was very fluffy, the salted butter was a perfect accompaniment.

Amouse Bouche
Cauliflower Soup with Pork Crackling

The amouse bouche was served in a tea cup with no spoon to go with it. So we just assume that we were to use the bread to soak up the soup. The soup was creamy and has a velvety texture, the crispy pork crackling add a touch of saltiness to it. A perfect start to a meal on a cold winter night.

Freshly Shucked Sydney Rock Oysters, Red Wine Vinegar Granita, Eschalot, Cracked Pepper

The oysters were from the South Coast Region of NSW and they are amazingly fresh, plump and juicy.
The waiter told us that the red wine vinegar granita is amazing, and he was right !
The icy and tart granita went very well with the fresh oysters, we wanted more just so we can use up all the granita.

Red Wine Vinegar Granita with Eschalot

NSW South Coast Snapper Carpaccio, Ponzu Sauce, Truffle Oil, Pork Crackling & Baby Herbs

The next to be served was the snapper carpaccio, the sashimi grade fish was fresh, sweet with firm texture. The ponzu sauce & truffle oil didn't overpower the delicate flavour of the snapper, the pork crackling was an odd but lovely addition to the dish.
The whole table agreed that this was the best dish of the night and would definitely order it again :)

Twice Cooked Organic Pork Belly, Apple Puree, Radish & Watercress Salad, Cinnamon Jus

The pork used is from Pasture Perfect, a gourmet free range producers of organic Berkshire Pork in the Northern NSW town of Ashford.  While the meat was very tender, we found that the dish was quite salty and the skin was chewy and sticky (stubbornly stick to your teeth! ), not crispy as we had hoped for.

Roasted Baby Chicken, Caramelised Jerusalem Artichokes, Chestnuts, Bread Sauce & Jus Gras

Like the previous pork dish, the chicken is also sourced from a local NSW free range chicken growers, Game Farm in the upper Hunter Valley region.
When having a degustation, you would expect to have a small portion of food, so I was thinking maybe we'll get 1/4 of baby chicken, or maybe just a few slices of the white meat.
But no....not 1/4 chicken....but.....(turn the plate slightly)....

Half (Baby) Chicken !!

Hellow half baby chicken !! It really took us by surprise that we were served half a chicken each, fine, it's a baby but it is still half a chicken nonetheless.
The meat was really sweet and very tender, while the others think it was bland, I certainly don't. Because it is just simply roasted, the flavour of the chicken does stands out.
I also love the creamy bread sauce, it's nice to see a different source of carb was used instead of the usual potatoes. I wished there were more of the caramelised jerusalem artichoke and chestnuts though, they went well with the roasted chicken.
The downside ? It was really hard to eat chicken on the bone with knife and fork. I must confess, the thought of abandoning the cutleries came across one too many times :P
But I persist and after about 15minutes, the bones were picked clean (-ish) with knife and fork !

Blood Orange Souffle, Vanilla Creme Chantilly

The menu on the website mentioned that the dessert would be Packham Pear Souffle, but we got a blood orange souffle instead. Not quite sure why it was switched.
The souffle was very good, there are times when I had souffle I dug into raw egg white, but not here. It was cooked right through while still retains it's cotton soft texture. It was then served with a drizzle of blood orange syrup and a side of creme chantilly.
The creme chantilly was amazingly good, just see the evidence in the photo below :)

Cleaned

The service I must say was superb ! Although the restaurant was packed and there was a large group of business men that arrived in the middle of our meal, the service remains friendly and attentive from the beginning to the end.
The foods were great and the fact that they are using locally produced ingredients is a bonus.
Shall be back to try out their steaks that looked so good (peeking at the table next to ours :P)

Outdoor Bar Area

There is also an outdoor bar area if you are just after some light meals and drinks after a long day at work :)

Vivid Sydney 2010 & Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe, Circular Quay

It's time for another Vivid Sydney festival !! Yippee \^o^/

We have some overseas colleagues visiting this week for some meetings so it's good timing that Vivid Sydney starts today.
Initial plan was to go with just a colleague from Japan but then the others caught wind of our small night tour LOL
So off I go playing tour guide for our visitors ^_^

We arrived at the Opera House right at the moment the light was switched on !
It was packed with people so we had a quick bite at Guylian cafe first to avoid the crowd.

We had some savoury meals first, but didn't whip out my camera since I'm not sure what will my colleagues think of me taking photos of their food...ehehhee....

But when the desserts arrived....well...that's a different story LOL
Big camera - OUT !!

Opera Evolve

Another lesson learned, do not always assume the website will have the most current menu -___-
I cannot remember exactly what is Opera Evolve (and this is only a few hours ago...getting old...arrgh!).
I think it was coffee sponge, coffee buttercream and raspberry sauce in the pipette.
You squeeze the sauce into the cake, so you end up with a raspberry centred opera. It is an evolved opera indeed....more interactive !
Obviously I chose this cake because there is a pipette stabbed into the cake....ehehehhee..

100% Pure Pleasure

It's Belgian chocolate & Guylian praline enriched with coffee sponge and pannacotta.
I didn't get to try this, but from previous visits, I remembered it being quite good.

My colleagues ordered milk hot chocolate, dark hot chocolate and iced chocolate for the drinks.
So by the end they were on chocolate coma LOL
We had these 2 desserts between the 4 of us and we couldn't finish it.

By the time we finished dinner, most of the crowd have left, so no need to squeeze around to take some photos :)

Please excuse the blurry photos, that is as stable as my hands can be on a cold night *_^
Definitely have to go around to see all the light projections again, armed with a tripod.

The Sydney Opera House - as it is usually

Sydney Opera House - 1st Projection Pattern

Sydney Opera House - 2nd Projection Pattern

Then it gets too cold so it's time to go home...

We saw all the light projections and the arc as we drive along Macquarie Street, and then a quick stop by the St.Mary's Cathedral.

St.Mary's Cathedral Light Projection

The projection here is very pretty , just took a quick snap since I have parked illegally on the street :P
I shall be back !!

But not before picking up the free mini torch and Vivid Sydney 2010 guides ^_^
The mini torch is dual powered - by battery or man powered.

Vivid Sydney Mini Torch - Battery Mode

Vivid Sydney Mini Torch - Man Powered

How do you work it ? Just like you would a stress ball, squeeze release squeeze release.
Will probably end up with a cramped hand by the end of the night...ehehehehe....

Menya, Circular Quay

My friend and I went to watch The Australian Ballet's Coppelia @ Sydney Opera House, but before that we had a quick dinner at Menya's Circular Quay branch.

Fellow Japanese food fans would have heard of Menya before. The first one was opened in Haymarket, then CBD near Darling Walk, and then the latest one was at Circular Quay.

I was a bit unsure as I walked down the steps as this Menya branch is located underground.
You had to go through a glass door that has some other restaurant's name on it, and walk pass a small coffee shop that is closed at night.
I almost walk back out coz I thought I entered the wrong place hehehee..

This location is more quiet (well, they are in a dungeon after all) and more restaurant like.
In the other Menya locations the orders are placed before you sit down and everything is self service.
Not here though, you sit down first and then the waitress will bring over the menu and some ice water as well.

The menu is a bit different, so it took us longer than expected to decide :P
Menya Box - choice of main (Chicken Katsu 2pcs), Hiyashi Soba, Green Salad, Rice, Miso Soup and Today's Dessert.

My friend ordered the Menya Box, where you choose your main from a selection , then you get all the others with the set. Unfortunately we couldn't stay to have the dessert as we are running super late, I wonder what it was.... ?

You know how when you look at a picture in the menu, and the actual dish comes out exactly the same or at occasion smaller in real life ?
I can tell you...not here.....
I thought I'll be good so I just ordered some salad and entree sized karaage (entree sized okay...).
And this came out....
Agedashi Tofu & Avocado Salad

A BIG plate of salad with 4 pieces of agedashi tofu ! @___@ My friend was laughing when the waitress put down the plate....
How am I gonna finish this on my own ??? It looks small and dainty in the menu !

I got to tackle that plate and this as well
Karaage ( Entree Size)

My entree sized karaage is a plate of 8 chunky pieces @___@
So now 8 pcs of karaage plus huge plate of salad....and I got 20minutes to scoff it all down...

The salad is very good, who knows agedashi tofu and salad can go so well ? And the karaage is juicy and you can taste the ginger it's been marinated in, love gingery karaage ^_^

The meals here are more costly compared to the other 2 branches, but I think you do get for what you pay.
You get more variety of the food, better quality and somehow it tasted better to me and my friend agree as well :)

At lunch time they have a Healthy Set Menu which looks interesting. If only I work near CBD *sigh*

After the "light" dinner,  I had to run from Loftus Street where the restaurant is, up to the Opera House, and of course our seat is on the Circle level - top of the Opera Theatre T____T

Scrunching my tummy for the first 15minutes of the performance....
